Why Seal Material Matters

The seal material inside a dosing pump plays a critical role in chemical compatibility, reliability, and service life. Different chemicals can react differently with internal components, so selecting the correct seal material helps ensure the pump performs accurately and lasts longer in demanding applications.

With Dosatron pumps, the most common seal options are selected based on the type of product being injected, particularly whether the chemical is more alkaline or more acidic in nature.

Why Dosatron Technology is So Effective

  • Operates without electricity

  • Maintains proportional dosing accuracy

  • Automatically Adjust changes in water flow

  • Reduces manual mixing and handling

  • Suitable for many different industries and applications

  • Simple, reliable, and easy to maintain

Common Dosatron Seal Materials

AF, or Aflas

AF, or Aflas is generally suited to alkaline products and many agricultural or cleaning-related applications. It is commonly selected when dosing products that require strong resistance to higher pH solutions and demanding chemical environments.

VF, or Viton

VF, or Viton, is generally suited to acidic products and a wide range of chemical dosing applications where strong compatibility with lower pH solutions is required. It is often used when dosing acids, sanitisers, and other more aggressive treatment products.

AF vs VF at a Glance

AF / Aflas

pH 7.0 - 14.0
Optimal for Alkaline / Base
  • Typically suited to alkaline products
  • Common in fertiliser and cleaning applications
  • Good resistance in high pH environments

VF / Viton

pH 1.0 - 7.0
Optimal for Acidic / Sanitizers
  • Typically suited to acidic products
  • Common in acid dosing and treatment applications
  • Good resistance in lower pH environments

How to Choose the Right Seal Material

The right seal material depends on the chemical or product you intend to dose. As a general guide, Aflas is more commonly selected for alkaline products, while Viton is more commonly selected for acidic products.

However, chemical compatibility can vary depending on the exact product concentration, formulation, temperature, and operating conditions. If you are unsure, it is always best to confirm compatibility before selecting a pump.

Typical Application Examples

Important note: Always confirm chemical compatibility for the exact product being used.

AF / Aflas may be suitable for: V/S VF / Viton may be suitable for:
Many alkaline fertiliser solutions Acidic treatment products
Some detergents and cleaning products Sanitisers and disinfection chemicals
General agricultural chemical dosing where alkaline resistance is needed pH correction and water treatment applications

What Happens if the Wrong Seal Material is Chosen?

Selecting the wrong seal material can reduce pump performance, shorten service life, and increase maintenance requirements. Incompatible materials may swell, harden, crack, or deteriorate over time when exposed to unsuitable chemicals.

Choosing the correct seal material helps protect your investment and ensures more reliable long-term dosing performance.

How Seal Material Appears in the Model Code

Dosatron model codes often include the seal material as part of the product name, making it easier to identify the correct option when choosing a pump.

Examples:

  • AF = Aflas
  • VF = Viton

Example Model: D25RE2VF

In this model code, VF indicates a Viton seal configuration suited to acidic chemical applications.
